There are several things that enter into the coaches that work in the Olympics. First, anyone allowed on the field of play during the World Championships or Olympic Games must have credentials. I will take them one at a time Olympic Games

Each team represents its National Olympic Committee. There are credentials for a certain number of coaches. In the case of the US, I think it is two coaches with one coach allowed on the field of play. The team managers, team leaders, and other personnel are not allowed on the field of play.

The reasons are many, primarily the issue of security and control. The National Olympic Committee may set its own guidelines as to how many coaches it allows, but only two will receive credentials for the field of play. However, they're prepared about two years in advance and approved by the International Olympic Committee.

World Championships

At its meeting in Houston in August of 1999, the Vice President's Bureau of AIBA adapted a policy that a team may have three coaches which would be permitted on the field of play, any two of whom may work in a given bout. I don't know any other rationale I could pass on to you other than to tell you that the International Olympic Committee adapts its policy, the US Olympic Committee adapts its policy, and AIBA has adapted its policy. What I am writing, too, is what they adapted.
