Cheating to get the "Win" is it worth it? As a coach who puts on any boxing match or tournament you must be very prudent. The fact is that if you are not prudent regarding your responsibilities you could be liable for a big lawsuit against you. You could possibly lose your license too. Depending on the circumstances and their amount of involvement, USA Boxing could possibly be liable per any lawsuit. As a coach your main responsibilities when putting on any boxing show or tournament are as follows: Safety, Safety, and Safety! Never mismatch a boxer in any way. Be honest about the boxers weight, age and experience that you are matching regardless if it is your boxer or not. Some coaches at your show put their trust in you totally. Some coaches are new in the sport and are hesitant about verbally challenging some bouts. There are also some coaches who don't care who they put their boxer in with because they just think their boxer can beat anyone no matter what the age, weight, or experience difference is. These boxers really need your protection. It is your job as boxing show director to protect all of the boxers who participate on your show. You take on a role besides coach when you decide to do any boxing show or tournament. Now your responsibilities are even greater especially when we are talking about minor age boxers under 18. However any age boxer should feel secure that they are not going to be mismatched in any way. Boxers trust the adults who are in charge. When have you ever heard a boxer question a bout? The question was, is cheating to get the win worth it? This is what you need to ask yourself if you are this type of person before you do any boxing show of any kind. Because if you do cheat in any manner and God forbid some boxer gets injured, you are responsible. To me, you deserve whatever financial lawsuit comes your way! You did a purposeful act and you should be liable. If any of you out there have any doubt about the importance of you being prudent regarding matchmaking of bouts, check with a good lawyer. Believe me no one is ever above the possibilities of being involved in a wrongful injury lawsuit. Another thing to ask yourself is what would the boxer think if I cheated for him to win? I do believe that no boxer wants to win by cheating. I also believe that most coaches don't want to win by cheating. As a coach, don't be afraid to ask questions at boxing shows regarding your boxers getting matched. If there is some doubt about anything before the bout ask the questions for your boxer's safety. Remember that if you as the boxer's coach allow a bout to go on after you suspected something wrong, it may be too late, and you may allow yourself to be part of a lawsuit if injury occurs. Stop the bout if there is any doubt! Any coach putting on a show or anyone putting on a tournament should not have any problem addressing your questions. Lets face it, unfortunately cheating does go on so we need to do all we can to prevent it. Those of you who insist on cheating at the scales during official weigh-in's and other forms of cheating at shows or tournaments will one day have to pay for your evil ways. In the end such bad deeds will come back to haunt you! To you cheaters out there, for the safety of all the boxers in our program now and who will join in the future, I hope and pray that soon your conscience will wake you up. If that doesn't do it, I hope all of you cheaters out there get slapped with a big lawsuit that devastates you financially!
